The H5N1 is a virus engineered by the Unified Citizens, led by Edward Page. The U.S. armed forces were sent to Antarctica to stop Page from releasing the bioweapon throughout the world. This campaign ended in a success, with Page killed and the genetics laboratory destroyed.
