The V.L.A.D. is a guided launcher with a guidance system similar to that of the SLS-3 and the AAW-1. Once a target has entered the weapon's lock-on radius (which is effective up to mid-range), the lock must be maintained for about 1 second, at which point the projectile can be fired at a target, dealing extremely high damage capable of killing any target with a single hit if it connects. However, even with a lock-on, the projectile can still be avoided with quick maneuvering. Unlike rocket launchers such as the COM 4, the projectile must make direct contact with a target in order to damage it, and does not produce explosive "splash" damage, making it a very unique weapon for its class.
Overall, the V.L.A.D. is an very unique weapon for its class, and tends to be unpopular in multiplayer - with players usually preferring the SLAK 7H or the COM 4. This is due to the fact that its projectiles must make direct contact with a target and produce no explosive damage, meaning "dumb-firing" without a lock-on is a purely "hit or miss" affair. Its small lock-on reticule also makes it quite tricky to maintain a lock on moving opponents. In addition, the VLAD's mobility is among the lowest in its class, tied with the S-41 GL.
On the other hand, if a player masters aiming while dumb firing, the VLAD can be an effective choice in close-mid range engagements, as the extremely high damage guarantees a kill if the projectile grazes any part of the opponent's body. The VLAD is also a potential counter to the Kommander class - as the class' slow movement with the shield deployed makes it potentially more vulnerable to the lock-on mechanic.
Trivia[]
- The VLAD appears to be a weapon which uses energy to launch non-explosive projectiles at targets rather than a conventional rocket launcher.
- Due to concerns of the weapon being underpowered, it's lock-on timer was lowered and its range slightly increased in an update by Gameloft.
